I'm the writer behind Rosa's Eyes — and the great-great-grandson of the woman it's named for.
I write and research family history from Costa Rica, with a home base in Sunrise, Florida, near my adult children. Rosa's Eyes is the product of years spent in archives, letters, and old photographs — tracing a woman history nearly erased, and the two sons who spent their lives reaching for her.
A reunion a century in the making
In April 1997, I traveled to a centennial reunion in Washington, D.C., where I met Bon Koizumi — Lafcadio's great-grandson. We shared a quiet moment beneath the Hale-Bopp comet, and standing there, I saw Rosa's eyes reflected in his face. Years later, at a ballgame in Miami, I saw them again — in my own son's face. That thread, running from a woman I never knew through generations to the people I love most, is the reason this book exists.
